Daniel Deusser takes number one spot away from Steve Guerdat

Olympic bronze medallist Daniel Deusser (GER) is now back to the first spot in the Longines Ranking for the third time. The 39-year-old has taken the top of the longines fei jumping rankings with 3,385 points after Steve Guerdat's streak of 28 months.

The German rider from the Stephex stables is a member of the German squad that took the team bronze medal in Rio 2016. He was just 25 points behind the 2012 Olympic champion Steve Guerdat (SUI) who held the position since February 2020. 

On the other hand Peder Fredricson has lost three places and is now in seventh position while Marlon Zanotelli has gained three places and has entered the Top 10. Beezie Madden remains the first woman in the Longines Ranking but is now in the eleventh spot. 

A third time champion

This is the third time that Daniel Deusser takes over the World No.1 title in his career. He had previously taken the position in 2017 from the German Christian Ahlmann and in 2015 he broke Scott Brash’s 16-month reign. 

Based in the Belgian Stephex stables, Deusser has won the silver medal at the Longines FEI European Championships 2019 in Rotterdam. Moreover, he has won at the World Cup events in Bordeaux in 2019 and more recently at the Al Shaqab Grand Prix.

An early start

Born in 1981, Daniel Deusser started riding when he was a child. He tried different sports and was even selected for the BMX regional championships, however, riding horses has always been his dream. 

This is why he started his equestrian career at the age of 19, representing Germany at the 2002 Young Rider European Championships. During this competition he placed fourth and he became one of the mainstays of the German team. A few years later, Daniel flew to the Netherlands and started working for Jan Tops before working at the Stephex stables in 2012. 

From this point onwards his evolution has grown exponentially, winning several titles and Grand Prix.  With Cornet d’ Amour he won the final of the 2014 FEI World Cup and finished third in 2016. With this same horse, he finished in second place at the 2013 and 2015 European Championships. 

An exciting result at the Longines ranking 

These new rankings reflect strong performances with the Swiss rider Martin Fuchs staying in the third position  with 3101 points, Ben Maher (GBR) into fourth with 3008 ahead of Kent Farrington (USA) and Scott Brash (GBR). 

Mclain Ward (USA) also steps in as number 9 in the world ranking while Pieter Devos (BEL) has dropped out of the top ten.
